Deaconate
The Diaconate is composed of men and women who are spiritual leaders in the church having been recommended by the Senior Pastor, having completed Deacon training, and possessing the following qualifications: thoughtful (I Tim 3:8), not double-tongued (I Tim 3:8), sober (I Tim 3:8), free from the love of money (I Tim 3:8), mature in their faith (I Tim 3:9), proven character (I Tim 3:10), faithful in marriage (I Tim 3:12), and one who manages their household well (I Tim 3:12); additionally a Deaconess must not be prone to gossip and be faithful in all things (I Tim 3:11). Each Deacon and Deaconess is charged with assisting in maintaining order in worship services; attending the physical needs of the ministry, visiting and ministering to members, and doing such other duties as are assigned from time to time by the Senior Pastor. Each member of the Diaconate shall be appointed by the Senior Pastor to serve in any area of need that might arise. Meetings are held monthly on the third and fourth Sundays for training.
Deacon
Qualifications:
Meet the requirements set forth in 1St Timothy 3:8-13 and meet the following other requirements. He must support church activities with faithful attendance to include Sunday school, Sunday morning worship, bible study, prayer meetings, and other worship services held in this church. He must also be willing to cooperate with and support the Pastor and the policies of the church.
Appointment:
1. When a vacancy exists and the need arises for a new deacon, the Chairman of Deacons shall consider the following qualifications when selecting individuals for the office of deacon.
A. Saved
B. Holy ghost filled
C. Faithful
D. Wise
E. Honest and of good report
F. Not fearful
G. Not high-minded
H. Not double tongued
• Members should be acquainted with Acts 6:3 and 1 Timothy 3:8-13
2. The pastor shall conduct a personal interview with the individuals recommended by the Chairman of Deacon. The Pastor may also interview individuals who were not recommended by the chairman.
Duties of the Deacons
1. Deacons are to be zealous to guard the unity of the Spirit within the church and serve the spiritual advancement and interest of the church.
2. The Deacons shall meet as often as they deem necessary for the performance of their duties, but they must meet at least once a month. They are to make plans to carry out their duties and shall confer free with the Pastor about all matters relevant to these duties and the welfare of the church.
3. The deacons shall perform the following duties pertaining to church ordinances:
a. Ensure the preparation of the elements used in observance of the Lord’s Supper.
b. Provide necessary assistance to the Pastor in baptism and feet washing services.
c. In the absence of other authorized officials, ordained deacons may perform baptism service when necessary.
4. In the absence of ushers, the deacons shall attend to the flow of church services. The senior deacon, in cooperation with the Pastor, shall be responsible for training the junior deacons.
Deaconess
Qualifications:
Meet the requirements as set forth in 1 st Timothy 3:8-13, as justified in Romans 16:1-2 and Philippians 4:3. Remembering that all qualification that apply to a deacon applies equally to a deaconess, allowing of course for the differences between the sexes.
1. She does not have to be the wife of a deacon to become a deaconess.
2. The wife of a deacon does not automatically become a deaconess.
Appointment
1. When the need arises for the election or replacement of a deaconess, the chairman of the deaconess’, in cooperation with the Pastor, shall proceed with nomination for deaconess.
2. The chairman of the deaconess’ shall interview the nominee and explain the qualifications and responsibilities of a deaconess upon her acceptance for nomination prior to her name being submitted for consideration.
3. The chairman of the deaconess’ shall present to the Pastor those who can meet the qualifications and responsibilities of deaconess.
Duties of the Deaconess
1. The Deaconesses, in cooperation with the Pastor and Deacon Chairman, shall be responsible for assisting in the observation of the Lord’s Supper.
2. Assisting in preparing female candidates for baptism.
3. Perform other duties as assigned.
